Synopsis: This book begins at the time of the Boer War and ends on the eve of the Great War. A social history of the finewst order detailing all York had to offer in this time frame, warts and all. It is the first of a projected trilogy of works on York and deals at length with the period of the People’s Budget, Old Age Pensions, the huge Liberal election success and violence in the city. One chapter is titled “Mob Law in York (and Sunday Trading)”, another “Politics, Education, Temperance and R H Vernon Wragge”, and a third “The People’s Budget, Trams and J W Hogge”. He was one of the most prominent radical politicians of the day and an associate of the city’s Quakers.
