The Fifth West Yorks. £3.50

This booklet on battalions from one of the most famous of the regiments in the British Army, is subtitled ‘Illustrated Historical Sketch of the 1/5th and 2/5th Battalions during the Great War’. It was first published in 1933, is 58 pages long, and is based on E.Wyrall’s The West Yorkshire Regiment in the War, 1914-1918. Wyrall was a prolific writer of regimental and battalion histories and this summary of part of this West Yorkshire volume details engagements where one or other of the chosen battalions fought and distinguished themselves. Familiar names crop up, naturally, like Beaumont Hamel, the Schwaben Reboubt, Bullecourt and Thiepval. The very last section deals with the disbanding of the 2/5th which, having ‘acquitted’ itself with distinction on the Marne ‘was then’ in the Pas area’. The men were told of the unit’s fate on 9 August. The 1/5th was specially chosen for the occupation of Cologne during 1919. In these pages is the brief, enthralling record of a very impressive war.
