World War 1 Postcards - Coloured

NOTE. This is a collection of 48 postcards and the price on each postcard page is for the full set.

In 1916 The Daily Mail began issuing an impressive collection of postcards of official war photographs. The first stages of the Battle of the Somme were over and the British Press Bureau invited tenders from publishers for permission to print what were often extremely dramatic photographs. The Northcliffe organisation got the contract for publication - and a part of the agreement was that war charities received grants from sales.

The Mail cards proved to be extremely popular and reprints had to be made fairly rapidly. The first ones saw the light of day in September 1916, when 'the Somme' had less than two months to run. Eventually no less than 176 cards were issued, but some of these were duplicates put out in different finishes. G H. Smith & Son have made copies of 48 of the collection, all of which are coloured. They are extraordinarily impressive and will become collectors items in their own right, without doubt. Many are familiar; all are evocative. A brief description of them follows. A. J. Peacock
