It is the place near where the mine explosion of 1 July, 1916 took place – the explosion immortalised in the film The Battle of The Somme and on thousands of postcards and in many, many books. This 1:10,000 maps has trenches corrected to 17 February, 1917 and is marked ‘Secret Number 869. Not to be taken beyond Brigade Headquarters’. The site of what became Hawthorn Crater is shown on a map that is of tremendous interest. Names like Stuff Redoubt; Godon Trench; 7 Ravine and Robert’s Trench will all be familiar names to WW1 enthusiasts.
