The Vale of Mowbray : A Historical and Topographical : Account of Thirsk and its Neighbourhood

Synopsis: A light history of Thirsk and its immediate neighbourhood starting from the earliest of times from the Brigantes, Romans, Saxons, Vikings the Norman Conquest through to the Victorian era. Also included is a physical history of the area (its Geology) and also its Climatoology.

This study, first produced in 1859, has a line drawing of Thirsk Church on its cover and is another of the local histories produced by G H Smith and Son. The author was a well-known botanist and his work consists of the histories of places like Bagley, South Kilvington and Kepwick. Entries contain digests of the histories of places like Osmotherley and the entry for Kepwick draws attention to a site of great interest to industrial archaeologists. There was built (around 1840) a tramway three and a half miles in length which took limestone from quarries “on the side of Hambleton” to kilns near the Yarm and Thirsk turnpike road. It was worked partly by horse power and partly by gravity.
