This issue is largely devoted to a study of some aspects of the career of Donald Hankey, a famous writer from the Great War. It is by Ross Davies and includes new material on Hankey. The first item in this important collection is titled “Donald Hankey and the Bapteme de Feu of 29/30 July 1915”. This is the title given to the first (German) flame-thrower attack on the Western Front (at Hooge). It has been dealt with in earlier issues of Gunfire where some very important facts were revealed by a participant. Issue number 40 concludes with the regular “Notes and Queries” feature.
